Hello, I'm Sam Burns and I am a last year graduate student in the applied math department. I am doing my research in fluid dynamics.

I am interested in using linear pattern correlations techniques from data analysis such as principal components analysis, singular value decomposition, and empirical orthogonal functions to develop methods of synthesis and as a composition technique.

I am also interested in psychoacoustics and the physiological aspects of hearing. Specifically the dynamics of the middle (physics of the basilar membrane and its connection to the nervous system) and outer ear (filtering of sound and spatial perception) and neural data compression.

I studied music at Oberlin college and am active in writing and performing electronic music in New York with the band De-regulator.

I am good at mathematical modeling of physical systems and asymptotic and numerical solution techniques for differential equations.
